Memoirs Of Life And Literature

Joan's Story - from idea to print

Joan came to one of our free Life Story Workshops at the seniors' centre wanting to capture the life stories of her 90 year old mother. Her mother had remarkable stories from growing up in northern Ontario that Joan wanted to capture so her own children and grandchildren could not only enjoy them for generations to come, but so they'd also have an understanding of their family history, their roots.
Joan had looked at a number of life story writing, memoir writing, and personal historian services and had encouraged her mother to write the stories herself. All had been either beyond the family's budget, or a task too overwhelming to take on. Over the course of a year, and following a number of suggestions and supports as outlined in the life stories' workshop, Joan was able to not only record her mother's stories onto audio CDs, but was also successful with turning those stories into a 100+ page, archival quality, family heirloom book. She made several copies for each of her siblings, children, and grandchildren.
The final product was priceless and all at a marginal cost to her family. It all started with a series of afternoon visits with her mother using the interview format and guiding questions as outlined in our how-to guidefor preserving / writing a life story.
' I am so grateful to have stumbled upon this life story approach at our local senior's centre. Our family wanted to preserve our mother's stories, but to date had been unsuccessful in getting them recorded. With our mother at 90 years of age, we knew our window of opportunity was shrinking. Lucy's step by step guidance and interview questions were just what we needed. We now have our mother's stories in a beautiful book as well as in in her own voice! Her stories will continue to entertain her family for generations to come.' Joan Smith, 2013
